Born in 1810, Rev. Francis Springer preached and taught in Springfield, IL, before moving to Hillsboro, IL in 1847 to assume the presidency of Hillsboro College. He continued his leadership at Illinois State University after the move to Springfield, but resigned in 1855. After his resignation, he served as school commissioner and superintendent of schools in Sprinfield before joining the 10th Illinois Cavalry as chaplain. Springer remained army chaplain in various capacities until the end of the war, when he resumed preaching in Illinois. Wittenberg College granted him an honorary D.D. in 1869. Rev.
