Carolyn Cutler Cox taught at Carthage College, primarily as a music teacher and was a Carthage graduate herself in 1904. Her son, Howard Ellis Cox became a student of Carthage in 1929 and was a member of Theta Tau Sigma fraternity during his college years. He graduated in 1933 and proceeded to go on to Harvard Law and Business School. He became a successful lawyer as the head of Cox, Treanor & Shaughnessy Law Firm as well as a Wall Street businessman.
