Untitled No. 1, September, 2003
Scope and Contents
Mural A large mural located on the stairway leading to the first floor of the Johnson Art Center; at the top are three figures dressed in choir robes and carrying songbooks, their mouths open as they sing; they are seated atop a white cloud which, at its center is a black-and-white depiction of Johann Sebastian Bach, who is flanked on both sides by cherubim-like figures whose faces resemble Beethoven's; at the bottom right corner is a depiction of the Earth, with a green ocean and a red landmass resembling the European continent and part of northern Africa, just above the depicted Europe is a woman depicted in a grisalle manner, with her long hair loose, wearing a chiton and playing a large harp. To her left is a blue satyr who plays a pipe, and behind them is a large purple hand with faded grey spots, and solfege written on the fingers in black paint. Swirling around in the background of the mural are music bars, overlaying a dark blue background with shining yellow orbs implied to be stars.
